Guidance on Managing Oyster Mortalities: Best Practices and Record-Keeping

Prince Edward Island
If you are a Prince Edward Island (PEI) resident and need to report a mortality event, please email msx@gov.pe.ca with the details.
Nova Scotia
In Nova Scotia, the Aquaculture Management Regulations (Section 21) has mandatory reporting of disease and mortality.
- Mortality is considered a reportable event if it is equivalent to 2% over a 24-hour period or 5% over 5 days of the current aquaculture site inventory.
- Both Haplosporidium nelsoni (Multinucleate Sphere Unknown (MSX)) and Perkinsus marinus (Dermo) are reportable diseases.
It is the responsibility of an aquaculture license holder, a member of the personnel of an aquaculture operation, a veterinarian, and/or a member of the personnel of a laboratory to immediately report mortality or suspicion/knowledge of a reportable disease to the Chief Aquatic Animal Health Veterinarian.
Reports of mortality or reportable disease should be made by either calling 902-893-5359 or emailing aquaticanimalhealth@novascotia.ca.

New Brunswick
In New Brunswick, under the Aquaculture Act, Section 59(3), shellfish mortality in excess of 15% of the stock over a 12-month period over an entire site shall be reported. A mortality event shall be reported within 24 hours after identification. The following form may be used to report such an event:

Reports of mortality should be made by emailing Chief Veterinarian Jennifer Acheson and Field Veterinarian Aly Brown at AQUA_CVO_CSV@gnb.ca.

Au Nouveau-Brunswick, en vertu du paragraphe 59(3) de la Loi sur l’aquaculture, un taux de mortalité des mollusques dépassant 15 % du stock sur une période de douze mois sur l’ensemble d'un site doit être signalée. Un épisode de mortalité doit être signalé dans les vingt-quatre heures de sa détection. Le formulaire suivant peut être utilisé pour signaler un tel événement :
